In October, CMS began activities that were halted due to the public health crisis including:

  • Application Fees
  • Criminal background checks associated with fingerprint-based criminal background checks
  • Provider/Supplier Revalidation

Medicare_Revalidation

Providers and suppliers that are required to revalidate in this initial phase of revalidation will be notified of their revalidation due date in two ways:

CMS has begun updating the CMS Revalidation Tool at https://data.cms.gov/revalidation. The tool will be updated to display an adjusted revalidation due date in addition to the providers original revalidation due date. The adjusted revalidation due date will be displayed at least 3 months in advance of the provider’s adjusted due date.

In addition to the revalidation tool online, each MAC will issue a revalidation notice to the provider/supplier at least 3 months in advance of their adjusted due date. Letters will be sent to the correspondence address on file in the Provider Enrollment Chain and Ownership System (PECOS).

Revalidation is required by CMS every 5 years for enrolled practitioners. Failing to revalidate a provider/supplier enrollment record can result in deactivation of billing privileges for the Medicare program. Once deactivated, a provider must re-enroll with Medicare. In the event of deactivation of billing privileges, providers will not be able to bill for any time period between the deactivation date and re-enrollment date. So it is imperative that providers/suppliers respond to and submit revalidation applications by the due date.
