A recent article published by Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) discusses the growing popularity of retail clinics.  Access to primary care physicians can be difficult in times of need even if you are a long established patient.  Retail clinics, on the other hand, offer immediate access to clinical care by physicians.

The key to growth of retail clinics is convenient access to care when you need it without having to schedule an appointment that may be days or weeks away.  Retail clinics were booming in the mid-2000’s, but slowed with economic recession beginning in 2008.  Major retailers such as CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart have all ventured into primary care retail clinics with varying levels of success.

The successful retail clinics are becoming much more than treating runny noses and sore throats.  More often clinics are offering ancillary services matching that of a traditional medical practice including x-ray, lab work,  sports physicals, and many are getting into managing chronic conditions.

In today’s market, the successful medical practice must adapt to the patient demands of cost effective and time efficient care.  Patients require access to physicians when they are sick, not when the physician’s schedule has an open slot for them.
